About This Event
"Distant Line" results from Lijun Chao and Andy Holliday's artistic collaboration. Through drawing, printmaking, and interactive digital works, they examine concepts of boundaries, distance, and place. This body of work explores an idea found in Buddhism expressed as "this side" (cǐ'àn 此岸) and the "other side" (bǐ'àn 彼岸). This dynamic represents physical separation, spiritual distance, and a difference in states of mind. Ultimately, the other side emerges as a transformative space, inhabited by all that we have lost or left behind, continually influencing our experience of the present.
Lijun Chao teaches drawing and painting at Auburn University in Auburn, AL. She is originally from Heze City, Shandong Province in China, and she earned her MFA in Painting from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She specializes in drawing and painting, including traditional Chinese watercolor.
Andy Holliday is Assistant Professor of Printmaking in Auburn University's Department of Art and Art History. He earned his MFA in Printmaking from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. His studio practice ranges from printmaking to digital interactive work. He seeks to broaden the boundaries of technical printmaking and expand accessibility to the medium.
