Broward College will host its second annual Mental Health Symposium, "Connecting Beyond the Stigma." This event aims to foster meaningful conversations surrounding mental health while breaking the barriers created by stigma. The symposium will unite students, faculty, staff, community, and mental health professionals to explore how open dialogue, shared experiences, and connections can reduce mental health stigma.

Julie Radlauer-Doerfler - Collectively-A Radlauer Ventur

In this presentation, research on the benefits of social influences on mental health will be shared. The social influences include social connections, social support, social capital, social media, and social inclusion. Data about why we need to attend to these influences and the benefits that come from focusing on them will be presented. More importantly, tangible tools and techniques will be shared in this interactive session. Participants will leave with activities that they may use in their communities to foster better connections, and support, help build capital, teach people to manage their social media and focus on social inclusion. When utilizing these social influences, individuals, organizations, and communities will experience improved mental health.

Anger is a normal, healthy human emotion. But when we cannot control our response, it stops being valuable and can lead to behaviors that cause problems. Learn about what triggers anger and influences our reactions. Explore strategies that can help you control your anger in healthy ways and defuse angry situations with others.

The goal is to help students navigate academic challenges while preserving their mental wellness.

The session will focus on the benefits this brings to the college, while also providing strategies on how to not only work with neurodivergent individuals but also on truly appreciating and understanding neurodiversity and how it strengthens our campus culture. Topics such as the Social Model of Disability, Universal Design for Learning, and assistive technologies will be discussed.

This engaging session delves into the pressing mental health and substance use challenges confronting today's youth within our community. Through interactive discussions, students explore topics such as social media challenges, cyberbullying, and the risks associated with vaping and Fentanyl. The workshop emphasizes the importance of recognizing signs of distress, accessing available resources, and fostering a culture where speaking up is encouraged. By empowering students with knowledge and strategies, we aim to equip them to navigate these challenges effectively and promote resiliency and overall well-being.

Jarvis Brunson - Change Me Foundation, Inc.

Jarvis Brunson's remarkable journey from a poverty-stricken community to advocate for change is a testament to resilience and compassion. Overcoming personal struggles, he realized the dire circumstances surrounding his community. Inspired by his parents' unwavering belief, Jarvis became an agent of positive change. Encountering like-minded individuals dedicated to improving lives, he fought for the true needs of his community. Through advocacy and volunteering, Jarvis championed ideas, raised awareness, and reduced stigma. In 2020, he founded the Change Me Foundation to ensure vital services for individuals, families, and seniors. Celebrate Jarvis's journey, reminding us that change is possible when we unite to advocate for those in need. Together, let's bring about the change we wish to see.
